Tustan – Medieval Cliff Fortress of Ukraine
Tustan came into bring when, during the Ninth Century, the White Croats, an ancient Slavic tribe, built a wooden fortress on this site and from that time that in history, Tustan became an major western outpost for the Kyivan Rus and an important customs point through which the medieval Salt and Silk Roads passed.
The name Tustan has an Old Slavonic origin. It is a compound noun made of two parts:- Tu +Stan – meaning “stand here” – interpreted by some researchers as “the city of the brave.” Repeatedly rebuilt over the centuries, its original five-story building was 25 meters high and, according to chroniclers, “was bleached like cheese, and shone in all directions”. lasting from the 9th to the 13th century based upon archaeological finds from that era.
Today Tustan is a State historical and cultural reserve featuring its own museum and a popular travel destination year round.
