What is a Pysanka?

What’s a “Pysanka”, you say? Well, in your Pysanka Masterclass you will find out – among other Ukrainian traditions you will come to know – that a Pysanka is a type of painted Ukrainian Easter Egg traditionally exchanged as gifts during the Pastoral Season.

How do You “Write” a Pysanka?

Preparing these eggs for painting (literally writing) –  is not nearly as easy as it was for those you might have boiled, inscribed with a crayon, then dipped into colored dyes for those Easter Egg Hunts as a child.

In your Pysanka Masterclass you will quickly find out that In fact “writing” a Pysanka is a very intricate and time-consuming process that involves first removing the yoke from the egg; drawing a traditional design on its shell by hand using a special pen; applying wax to certain areas of the design; and alternately dipping the egg into separate dye baths then removing the wax with a lighted candle then re-dipping the egg into another dye until the process of writing is completed.

How can I Learn To Write a Pysanka?

You can learn about writing a Pysanka in our Pysanka Masterclass and since writing a Pysanka can be mastered only by a true artist — like Folk Art Master Halyna Syrotyuk – who is a member of the National Union of Folk Art Masters of Ukraine – she will be the mentor for your Pysanka Masterclass conducted at her studio located on the grounds of the Museum of Folk Architecture And Rural Life in Lviv.
