On the 21st of May we celebrate the Day of Vyshyvanka<\/strong> in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Vyshyvanka<\/strong> – is the newest name for a Ukrainian folk-designed shirt\/blouse decorated with ornamented embroidery. Vyshyvanka is an important component of the Ukrainian national costume<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Archaeological excavations and testimonies of travelers and chroniclers confirm that embroidery as an art form in Ukraine has existed since the Eneolithic. Ancient historians, including Herodotus, claimed that the remains of woolen garments decorated with multicolored embroidery were found in the tombs of the first centuries AD. Silver plaques with figures of men dating to the 6th century have been found in the Martynivsky treasure in the Cherkasy region, indicating the similarity of clothing and embroidery of the Ukrainian folk costume of the Middle Ages and modern times. The Scythians were familiar with the art of embroidery. Several surviving fragments of woven products indicate that the clothes were decorated with ornaments made by quilting.<\/p>\n

The best preserved pieces of fabric from the Ryzhanivsky mound have a pattern in the form of an eight-petalled rosette. Embroidered shirts also existed in the times of Kyivan Rus, which is confirmed by chronicles, as well as images on the frescoes of St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv. In the XVII century embroidery was enriched with floral ornaments. From the XVII-XVIII centuries till nowadays a sufficient number of original monuments of folk embroidery have been preserved.<\/p>\n
